Hungarian Recording Artist, Philanthropist, and Music Entrepreneur William Dunst, Born Vilmos Dunszt, Shares His Family Legacy. He comes from a family whose story stretches across the country and even across the Atlantic. One of his great-great-aunts, Rozalia Dunszt, moved to the United States in the early 20th century and became Rose Knolmayer. Born in 1868 in the village now called Pénzesgyőr, she married Mihály Knolmayer, later Michael F. Knolmayer in America, and began a new life on the other side of the ocean.
Meanwhile, back in Hungary, the Dunst family left its mark on many cities. From Sopron to Kecskemét to Budapest, family members contributed to Hungary’s cultural, civic, and infrastructural development. Gusztav Dunst helped promote bridge projects and supported the creation of the Sopron–Pozsony railway line. Ferenc Dunst served as mayor of Veszprém, playing a role in the city’s modernization. Across generations, the family included master craftsmen, hoteliers, and artists — among them Mária Dunszt, a celebrated soprano at the Hungarian State Opera.
Though the family name reflects German roots, William is fully Hungarian. Today, he continues the legacy, creating music, building businesses, and giving back to the community — carrying forward a story that spans centuries, cities, and oceans.
