The Foundation Louis Vuitton in Paris is currently showcasing a 1937 painting by Rothko titled “Untitled (The Subway)” which belongs to the Elie and Sarah Hirschfeld collection. This exhibition marks the first retrospective of Rothko’s work in almost 25 years. Elie and Sarah Hirschfeld are proud to see their painting being displayed among 115 major pieces from around the world.
“The shapes in the pictures are the performers,” said Rothko, who liked to compare his paintings to dramas. The idea is typified in Elie Hirschfeld’s piece, where New York commuters and underground structural elements play equally prominent roles in the dynamic scene unfolded on the canvas.
The Louis Vuitton Foundation is hosting an exhibition that offers a Parisian perspective on the American artist’s work. The exhibition opens with the artist’s intimate urban scenes from the 1930s, including the Elie Hirschfeld piece, and then progresses into his surrealism and abstraction. The retrospective of Rothko’s work occupies the entire space of the foundation and will be on display until April 2024. According to the curator, Suzanne Page, the exhibition provides access to transcendence.
Elie Hirschfeld, along with Bernard Arnault, the CEO of LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton, attended the opening night of an exhibition in Paris. Elie and Sarah Hirschfeld’s full collection, “Scenes of New York City,” is currently on display at the New York Historical Society for the last two years. From November 1, 2021, to January 28, 2024, Elie Hirschfeld’s artwork will be showcased at the Palm Beach Society of the Four Arts in Florida. The exhibition will feature detailed information about each artwork, a complete catalogue of works, and an interview with Elie Hirschfeld.
