How did you go about identifying your strengths and passions early on, and how did you leverage them in your career choices?
I am a big believer in understanding and leveraging your DNA. Hence why I wrote this book. Companies are like people, and both do better when they understand who they are at their core and leverage it to succeed. For me, I recognized very early on that I enjoyed writing and playing music. Both of which I inherited from my parents. I actually got accepted to Northwestern on a music scholarship, playing the trumpet. During the audition, I gave the performance of a lifetime. But after I was admitted into the program, it became clear to me that I was good–very good even– but not great. And there just simply aren’t enough opportunities (jobs) for good trumpet players. So I tuned into my other passion and skill: writing. And that element of my DNA has guided my entire career. I have always pursued storytelling in some capacity or another.
I remember speaking at length with my daughter about innate talent when she was very young. I think understanding your DNA requires you to identify and explore your innate talents- the things you enjoy and come naturally to you, the activities you don’t mind putting in the work for. I would tell her to explore these innate talents and then pick one (maybe two) to go after with everything she’s got. A lot of people forget that success is demands sacrifice. You can be anything you want, but not everything. So when considering how to leverage your strengths, passions, and DNA in your career, consider the opportunities in front of you and pursue them relentlessly.
Did you always know you wanted to work in the field of branding and marketing, or did your career path evolve over time?
I always wanted to write, but writing per se doesn’t enable a living. I landed in marketing somewhat accidentally in search of a vehicle for writing that I could love and make money simultaneously. Once there I discovered that my real passion is strategy and that expressing strategy elegantly through words inspires action and that’s where a real difference can be made. Which of course is the thing that matters to everyone at the end of their life. Did you matter?
What role does mentorship or guidance from experienced entrepreneurs play in your own
professional development?
Mentorship has played a key role in my personal and professional development, which I think are inextricably intertwined as an entrepreneur. I have benefitted from formal mentorship relationships, like the one I had with Regis McKenna. I have also benefitted from others who didn’t even know they were mentoring me, like Steve Jobs. Finally, some of my most influential mentors have been my children. I decided very early on that I would learn from them, and boy have I learned so much from them. I have always respected their point of view, listened when they disagreed with me, and adopted their ideas that were better than mine.
My point is that anyone can be a mentor to you and you should constantly be seeking out relationships that challenge you to grow.
Your book, Get to Aha!, is a best seller and followed and studied by many. How do you address the balance between creativity and practicality when it comes to achieving the “Aha!” moment?
I believe positioning requires a rational approach. You introduce creativity when you start to strategize the expression of your position. Creativity is the yang to practicality’s yin. Both are critical, but there is an order of operations. You need to draw the outline before you can color in. The game changing “Aha!” moments actually come out of discussions around vision, BHAG, category, differentiation, value proposition, etc. All of which are very rational, practical conversations and decisions. We really only start to think creatively when we’re thinking about the emotional connection we want to create between a brand and its community. The reason for this is because positioning strategy needs to be the rock-solid foundation upon which everything else is built; and it’s a strategy that needs to be developed rationally and practically.
Naturally, there is some creative thinking required to challenge the status quo and develop game changing strategies, but creativity on its own is not enough to build a market leading brand. Neither is purely rational messaging. You need both the strategy and the expression to complete your brand identity. The yin and the yang. Start with the rational (the yin) and end with the creative (the yang).
As a successful entrepreneur and marketing industry leader, what are three key concepts to maintaining a healthy work-life balance?
- Know when to stop working. Work is like a river, always flowing. You have to be able to jump in and out on your terms and be okay with the fact that some things will float by you.
- Always make time for your health. No matter how busy I am, I always make the time to work out every morning. It gives me energy and makes me more productive, but it also acts as an hour or two that is just about me and not about work. Health and wellness are the best investments you’ll ever make.
- Compartmentalize. It can be hard as an entrepreneur to leave work at work, especially when you work from home. The busier you get, the more important this becomes. In order to be fully present in a meeting, at home, building a presentation, or any situation, you have to leave your baggage at the door.
What’s your favorite travel destination or a place you’d love to visit in the future?
It might sound a little crazy, but I’d really like to go to Mars. I’ve always been fascinated by space travel and new frontiers.
