The national average for utility bills this winter is projected to sit around $133.16 per household, with 18 states predicted to exceed this benchmark. The study’s findings were based on comprehensive data analysis from the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA), comparing winter months’ costs from 2022, 2023, and forecasts for 2024.
States Projected to Face the Highest Bills
1. Hawaii: $226.01
Despite a decreasing trend from $237.59 in 2022 to $216.99 in 2024, Hawaii retains the top spot for the highest utility bills.
2. Connecticut: $189.55
Projected to cost 16% less than Hawaii, Connecticut’s bills peaked last year at $202.75.
3. Alabama: $165.58
With a steady increase from $157.36 in 2022 to $173.54 in 2024, Alabama lands in third.
4. Massachusetts: $163.99
Bills increased significantly in 2024, reversing a dip from the previous year.
5. Texas: $160.42
Texas rounds out the top five, with a gradual rise in utility costs over the three-year period.
States Projected to Face the Lowest Bills
1. Utah: $81.63
Utah is highlighted as the least expensive state for utility bills, showing a unique decrease to the lowest figure in any state.
2. New Mexico: $90.34
Following Utah, New Mexico ranks second lowest with a modest projected increase from previous years.
3. Colorado: $97.71
Colorado claims the third spot, with bills gradually increasing over the years.
The spokesperson from Universal Windows Syracuse commented on the financial stress of winter expenses, stating, “Winter can be a testing time for many families, with added expenses from home repairs, holiday festivities, and utility bills. Households in higher-cost states need to be proactive in planning for these bills. By being prepared, they can mitigate the impact of unexpected costs during the colder months.”
